like God was winking

Last Thursday Trevy was still feeling a little under the weather from the *hurlie bug* that had invaded our home over the weekend.

But it was school day. And he was over the hurlie part. I thought it'd be a nice change of scenery for him.

Which school btw...is really more of a playgroup with therapists. Three other kiddos with various special needs are in his class. Trevy's the only seizure boy. During class the moms visit in a room with a big blinded window where we can keep an eye on our bugaboos.

I peeked to find a happy Trevy. Throwing a ball. Binky grinning. I'm not sure if I'll ever take his bink away. He looks way too cute grinning behind it.

But somewhere during class Trev lost that happy vibe. And started crying. But then the most amazing things happened...

He cried...

...grabbed at his coat...

::cha ching!::

...walked to the door & tried to open it...

::did you see that?!::

...and when that didn't produce the result he wanted...

...he walked over to the PECS (picture exchange) board aaaaaaand...

GRABBED THE ALL DONE CARD!!!!!!

::holy freakin' moly!!!::

I can't even express how HUGE that was to me. To his teachers. To EI Kelly...who's been with us since Trevy was just 7 months old. We were all giddy. Like we'd won the lottery or something.

::laugh::

And when I shared the happy wordy news with a church friend on Sunday. Who also knew the Dr. Boston gloomy news.

She said something that struck me in my sappy spot...

It's like God was winking at you!

Indeed. It was. I've always been a fan of the warm fuzziness of winks.

The first time PECS actually works it's amazing. And exhilirating. To know that SOMETHING is getting through to him!

So what did the teachers do? Even if class wasn't over I would really hope they let him be 'all done'... just this once so he could SEE the outcome of his request.

haha...I guess I did forget to mention that this one time they let him leave early. We all chalked it up to not feeling good. But they warned me that if he does the same thing this week...we'll have to make him push through it.

Jen...it truly WAS an amazing feeling. So powerful. I'm slowly buying into using PECS for Trev. I'm not convinced that his brain recieves speech the right way...in fact his BEAM study proved that it doesn't. Buuuut...I KNOW that he understands what he sees. And I just really think PECS beats on Trevy's strong point. Now to get over my lazy bum 'tude...and start laminating pix for him! *smile*

Wow!! That's so awesome!
Don't you just love witnessing that they get it? That their little minds work and are wonderful, despite all the stuff going on?! Just makes your heart happy!
"God winking..." Beautiful! I shall keep this in mind and look for the winks when in need.
So happy for you & Trevy!

So amazing! The *wink* is a delightfully appropriate way of putting that! And I know how HUGE that is and how thrilled you must be to see that it's registering!

So great to hear!

YEAH! So happy for you and Trevy. I think I'm going to ask Emma's teachers about doing this. I hope Trevy continues to make that connection. It's a beautiful thing!

Phenomenal! We've been working PECS with Hollis for years, and she HATES it! She knows how to use it, but knows it's much more effective to either do things herself or throw a tantrum. We also had the LGS thing thrown at us, but she never showed up with the right EEG, but one neuro continued to espouse she had LGS. Keep on keeping on!

Do you have the PECS program? I have a ton of stuff I can send you. Email me tomorrow!
Woo Hoo!!!!! Way to go Trevy! So proud of you little buddy. Danielle, you sooo deserve a moment like that. You and Trevor are working so hard and it's so nice to see you both get to see something positive come out of it. Your heart needs that. Trevor you are an amazing little man!

No, I don’t know him personally

  I’ve had several emails today asking if I know Mike W. of Marissa’s Bunny personally.    Trevy’s blog was linked on her site.  Although it’s not now.     I’ve posted here and there at his request.  Because…well…we’re a community.  Us IS families.  And Marissa is wicked cute.  Her daddy has a way with words.  Also who wouldn’t want the world to know about an iPad give-away?    But aside from that…I know about as much as you do.    We’ve never met in person.    Our only communication has been cyber.    I’m a ginormous sap and as such would love to believe that all is right.  That the sweet, beautiful families who were promised iPads will be getting them tonight.  Tomorrow at the latest.  That no one has been lied to.  That the personal thank you for your generosity email I sent him on behalf of other IS families I’ve grown to love and was thrilled to learn w...

the great answer hunt in the land of Infantile Spasms

If I've said it once... I've thought it a million times more. How it's like the more I research...and discover...about IS. The more blurry everything becomes. For every answer found. A dozen questions are unearthed. Remember our whole ARX saga ? Yeah...that threw me for a loop. So much so...that I never went on to post the end of the story. Thus far... See...the unbelievable in the world of genes happened. Because this is IS-ville after all. After Dr. Genes sampled Trevy's ARX gene on a whim...a whim which revealed an unkown (meaning the first time this specific change was found) mild mutation...she proceeded to send Toby's blood off to mad scientist central. With assurances that this was totally unnecessary . She was convinced that Trevor's ARX mutation was the underlying cause of his Infantile Spasms. And that Typical Toby...would prove to be just that. Typical...at least in all areas mutate-able. And yet...Toby's ARX blood sample revealed THE SAME MIL...

I sure hope...

they grow back curly! Saw the "unknown" flashing on the face of my cell phone and knew who it was. Who it had to be. Dr. Fellow. My eyes met Grams' and I nodded. Grams has a pool, see. For super hot days like today. We're also having a septic installed. Which meant no water or facilities at my place. But those weren't really the reasons I was there. Close to mom. The purple ringing thing in my hand was. Only I wasn't prepared for it to be ringing SO darn soon. Shortly after lunch instead of dinner! I swallowed. Took a deep breath. And clicked connect. Dr. Fellow has a very nice phone tone. Clear. Hint of compassion. If only a stitch of humor were added...it'd be heavenly. But there was no humor. Just business. He's very direct. I'm learning that about him. Which explains his short hello. Followed by immediately pushing into the news. Being that it was a unanimous consensus. The entire surgical committee feels Trevor is a good candidate. And then p...
