it ain't sexy livin' on an island...

Especially when you have to cross bridges to get ANYWHERE.

Very LARGE bridges.

The crests of which I inevitably get stuck at. Speaking of...why is it that at the tippity tops of our bridges...the railings always open up? To reveal an eagle's eye view of the white capped depths below?

I HATE that.

And sure enough...in route to Dr. Pedi yesterday...they must have seen me coming cause traffic ground to a halt at the top of the Mt. Hope Bridge. Where I felt less than Hope-ish. My palms gushing my nerves onto the steering wheel for a good 15 (felt like forever) minutes.

Not just things medical bring out my cowardly lion. Heights do too!

Anyway...

Grabbed an iced coffee and chocolate cream filled to settle my nerves on the way. And we arrived on time...in one piece. Of course.

Dr. Sick-Visit-Pedi breezed in chart in hand. Glanced down. Then at Trevy. Then said...

"He has a history of Infantile Spasms?"

Surprise and speculation in her voice. We get that a lot. It's a surface thing.

"He's high functioning (hate it...but what else is there?) so it's deceptive....but yes he has 100s of seizures a day. And now that you mention it...could you pass on to our normal Dr. Pedi that he's scheduled for a subtotal hemispherectomy for me?"

Without batting an eye-lash (which caused to me bat my own!) she assured me she would. Wished us good luck! And then proceeded to check his ears. Which after several days of fussing Dr. Mommy had finally concluded must be infected.

And was right. Where's my certificate to frame and hang on my wall?

The non-verbal thing can be so hard to navigate sometimes. Especially when the body doesn't give any clues...like fevers or drainage. And I'm forced to read the fussies alone.

Anyway...

One dose of antibiotic later...and he's a completely different kid!

And may we make it through the next month with better sleep...less fussies...and NO crossing of Mount Hope Bridges!

Definitely hoping this month is uneventful...in terms of fussies and sickies at least.

Austin's had one ear infection. No fever, no drainage either. Full of fussies though. I never suspected an ear infection. It just so happened to be caught when I took him in for an eye infection!

Good catch on that one!

Glad that Aunty Biotic is working her miracle magic and that he's got some relief.

I don't like heights either...

Yeah I pretty much don't have anything of importance to leave in my comments, just leaving one anyway. :)

Glad to hear that you made it over the bridge! I do not like bridges either, especially ones with water under them....I still close my eyes if I am not driving when we go over them.

Good deal that it took just one dose to help Trevy feel better :)

In our thoughts and prayers always!

Yea, I can relate to the bad feeling at the top of a high bridge. I blame the movie industry - showing us all those bad bridge scenes.

Is this my message that you won't be coming over to see me in a couple of weeks? Or is that a bridge in the other direction?

Ditto on the bridge thing....MAJOR panic attacks if it is a real long one!!! Yuck!

Playing detective when they just fuss w/no other symptoms? Ditto a thousand times! Don't like it either...It gets SO OLD!!! And YES, we DO deserve a diploma....

Ears? 6 previous sets of tubes for Mr. C. Never runs a fever or has drainage (except the two times his eardrum burst!)

Docs? Seems like alot of them either act like there is nothing special about our kids' conditions at all and ignore it....OR they stare at them, frightened like they've seen a monster....

Oh well...Too bad everyone can't be perfect like us!!!

P.S. Re: getting sick before surgery....Colby has been FAMOUS for getting an ear or sinus infection RIGHT BEFORE surgery...We eventually began low dose prophylactic antibiotics before each one so we wouldn't have to cancel all the time!!!

Don't know if your doc might consider that or not....Might help....

I'm with ya....I hate bridges. Thankfully most of them here are flat or have slight inclines but only one or two actually arch towards the sky. And I avoid them like the plague!!!

Glad that Trevy is feeling better already. I remember my nephew had a heck of a time with them when he was little....lucky for me, none of my girls have ever had one.

Man, I love it when I get to freak the doctors out. My all-time favorite was when this nurse looked at his info and says, "he had a grade IV bleed in his head?" and I got to say "he had two." Charlie is very delayed, but he looks good and that always throws them off.

Holli...Trevy actually has tubes! When he was littler he had at least an ear infection a month...it was awful. He still gets them with the tubes...but at least the gunk usually leaks out his ear to help me know. Anyway... it stinks!

Ken...no profound words necessary. xoxo

Jody...I was tempted to close my eyes...but that wouldn't have really been helpful!

Barbara...different bridge! Although there are biggies EVERYWHERE!

Cyndi...you make me smile! Love you!

Adesta...after Jonathan researched that RI has THE worst bridges in the nation...even the flat ones freak me out!

Katy...the surface thing always throws them for a loop. ;)

I can handle bridges when I am driving alone but I avoid bridges when I have the kids. It's stupid but I feel like u could have a fighting chance of saving myself but a zero chance if saving the kids if something happened.

Oh Jen...that totally made me laugh! Because I have those internal converstations ALL the time...being that there is no avoiding bridges here! As I was sitting at the top of that rickety ancient bridge I was thanking my stars that I only had Trevy. Cause I could handle the two of us...I think...

*sigh* I should probably bring this up at my next check up...

Something about ear infections before surgery. Ryan's eardrum burst before surgery. I obviously had no idea he had an ear infection until this happened. Thankfully his antibiotics cleared everything up before we left for Detroit.

Wait until you have to spell subtotal hemispherectomy for the medical people:-)

I hate brides too - I can walk them but not drive on them. Just can't get the thought of crashing through the barrier into the depths below...not the sort of thought you need in charge of a car.

Good to know I'm not alone....
