a worship story

I arrived late. The gathering space was already hushed in preparation for The Lord's Supper. Jonathan was preparing to pray. I involuntarily started tip-toeing softly to my seat so as not to be disruptive.

Which would have worked quite nicely had Trevy not spotted me.

Mama! Mama!

His cry split the reflective mood wide open.

Those closest to us chuckled. They've known Trevy for over two years now. And marvel at his miracle moments with us. Every vocalization is a miracle.

I smiled. He beamed and reached for me.

It would have been a sweet snuggle moment if he had not insisted on pointing to every single object and approximating with gusto what he thought it was. He has very little respect for the solemness of communion. Somehow I think Jesus is okay with that. But I did the responsible mommy thing and shushed him anyway.

It would have worked quite nicely too. If he wasn't currently in an imitate everything phase.

He scrunched his little face up in this way he has and repeated after me.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Echoed with the instrumental music through the room.

The chuckling around us grew louder. I could be mistaken but it sounded like more voices were joining in.

Which would have been quite nice too...

Except it only served to inspire more face scrunching and louder shushing from Trevy!

I looked down at him. He grinned up at me. Sparkling eyes. Crooked grin. A glimmer of drool perched on his chin. So beautiful. So broken.

And I felt a warmth unfold in my belly. And slowly migrate and swirl making it's way to my sappy heart. Which was simultaneously seeping from my eyes and exhaling from my lips in muffled mirth.

There we sat. The two of us. Surrounded by an atmosphere of worship.

And I was filled with it all in that moment. In that moment I felt nothing but Peace and Joy. A Peace that passes understanding swept around us like a tidal wave.

I spend many many moments sad. In mourning. My son is broken. It drips from every part of him. His brokenness if reflected in the way his little body moves. In the way he communicates. Or doesn't. In the way he smiles. It's there when we force medicine down his throat. It's there when he has a seizure. It's written in black and white on his developmental evaluations. It's there when I think about his future. Or when Toby wrestles with the other little brothers Trevy's age at church because his own doesn't understand how to play like that yet. It's there when his sister prays for his sickness to go away and that he'll talk to her before she's all grown up. It's there when I touch his scar. And when I try to bear hug everything different.

Trevy is broken.

I spend many many moments allowing his brokenness to eclipse everything else. A reflection that I am broken too.

But every now and then I have a moment. A Peace that Passes Understanding moment.

And for just a while my heart is filled with comfort and joy and peace that Trevy's miracle will come someday...

I sat simmering in the moment this morning.

And would have done so for a lot longer too. Had Trevy not...

...noticed the projected glass of wine on the screen in front of us and loudly exlaimed and pointed...

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

In that moment my simmering bubbled over and I spent the rest of communion hugging him close. Seeped in worship and laughter.

Danielle,

You're making the tears roll down my cheeks today here in NC.

What an amazing thing you have reminded me of today. We are all broken. Yes indeed we are all broken just in many different ways some more visible, more tangible than others.

Thank You! This is like a revelation to me today. Something I know in my heart to be true but something I don't always remain conscious of.

We're all broken!
Amen!

The Lord wants us to have "joy" and I think this is what you had with Trevor! Joy in knowing the Good Lord who loves us, just as we are. Love you so much and I think Babu smiled down today knowing that you all are serving and worshiping the Lord. Bibi

This is lovely.
Though the days are long and hard with special needs kiddos.....how beautifully Christ is revealed in brokenness.

That was so touching!

Reminds me of when Julia and I were at the grocery store a couple of weeks ago...we pass the wine section and Julia loudly says "Look! Mommy's wine!" I was shhsing her like crazy.

What a beautiful post. I'm new to your blog -- curious after our exchange over at Single Dad. I look forward to learning more about you and your family!

Thank you all...

@Lisa...you made Jonathan bust a gut!

@ Elizabeth...I know I've stumbled on your blog before. I just somehow missed that your daughter had IS. But when you mentioned seizures and big guns I of course thought...ACTH. :)

@the rest...you made me smile.

Ya know, I have never once thought of Trevy as being broken. Maybe because I'm not directly in contact with him, but I see Trevy and all the other people out there that aren't the typical "normal" that society expects, as God's miracle children and His group of special people that we all can and do learn a lot from. God holds a special place in His heart for these people and when the day comes that they get to meet Him, all in Heaven will rejoice that they will finally get the priviledge of meeting them.

I didn't make it to church once again today....Seems that's the norm these days....

But I got the most beautiful sense of worship here from your post....

Thank you, once again, so much for sharing your life so beautifully.....

I cried when I got the news

I felt like such a heel not going with Trevy for his first post hemi EEG. Yeeeeeees...Jonathan went with him. Yeeeeeees...he's just as good as me. But still! He's my baby! I was instead sitting on floor 6 east waiting for Neurology to get their boots here and help me sort out this medicine mess! Seriously it's like a bad joke...how many Neurologists does it take to write a bloody script? And fax prior authorizations? Cause Trevy's been back for hours now. And I'm STILL waiting! Anyway... Jonathan had just stepped out to meet the pizza delivery guy when Dr. EEG made his rounds. Of course I asked immediately if he had read the EEG. Of course he had. That's why he was there afterall. And I cried when he told me... that for the first time in almost two years. For the first time since this whole crazy mess began. my baby's EEG is completely normal! Side Note: It's super fun to sob in front of Japanese men and watch them squirm When I kept repeati...

I sure hope...

they grow back curly! Saw the "unknown" flashing on the face of my cell phone and knew who it was. Who it had to be. Dr. Fellow. My eyes met Grams' and I nodded. Grams has a pool, see. For super hot days like today. We're also having a septic installed. Which meant no water or facilities at my place. But those weren't really the reasons I was there. Close to mom. The purple ringing thing in my hand was. Only I wasn't prepared for it to be ringing SO darn soon. Shortly after lunch instead of dinner! I swallowed. Took a deep breath. And clicked connect. Dr. Fellow has a very nice phone tone. Clear. Hint of compassion. If only a stitch of humor were added...it'd be heavenly. But there was no humor. Just business. He's very direct. I'm learning that about him. Which explains his short hello. Followed by immediately pushing into the news. Being that it was a unanimous consensus. The entire surgical committee feels Trevor is a good candidate. And then p...

it's like being asked to the prom...

only MUCH MUCH bigger! I had noticed (yes...I stalk my site meter!) that a government ISP had logged onto Trevor's blog. Whoever it was had spent a good deal of time hanging out too. Followed a few minutes later by a government ISP...hailing from Washington. As in DC! My eyebrow raised. It was just kinda odd. Note-able odd. You know? Anyway...later that day (last week) I was folding laundry & thinking my crazy insane thoughts. Along these lines... I hope I'm not saying anything I shouldn't! Maybe I made somebody mad? Wait a minute! I live in America! I'm allowed to say anything I want! Aren't I???? A shout from the other room interrupted my thoughts before I had a chance to further mull. It was Jonathan. I had just received an email. **Side note...he's always doing that! Reading my emails! Sheesh!*** The said email was from a US Senator's aide! Asking if he could speak with me. Little ole' hardly has time to splash some make-up on ...
