how we’re planning to use alphabet movement cards

I reviewed All About Reading’s Pre-Reading program last week.  In case you’re in a hurry, I’ll nutshell my thoughts right now:     I it!     So what does that have to do with movement cards, right?       Well…Trevy being 100(andthensome)% boy…     the thought occurred to me the other day.  While he was being wiggle-licious.  That I should take some movement breaks.  Or find some printable movement cards.  Preferably something that reinforces what we’re working on.      Which led to surfing here, there and everywhere.  Finding notta that worked for me.  I was almost convincing myself that I should just develop my own.     Enter The February Curse     Every February…just far enough into the year to think we’ve escaped…it never fails.  The Curse hits us.  And hard.  This year’s was/is Influenza B.  Bleh.  Which ...

the art of double speak

Trevy is doubling lately.     Rather than saying     Big car     He’ll say     Big big car!     Which not only serves to make him even more wicked cute (as if that were possible, right?!)…but also increases his sentence lengths!  Eat your hearts out, oh ye skill trackers!      Other adorable doubles include…     I vewwie vewwie (very) saaaaad     Whittle whittle (little) run     Give Daddy big big huuuuug     Vewwie Vewwie doooock (dark)     Big big mooooooon (insert noun of choice before big big – he uses it often)     Noooo Noooooo (cause one No is never enough)     It’s so deliciously cute.  Just like him!     …danielle

speech development chart (a pinterest find that had to be shared)

I t his speech development chart by Wee Talk Speech & Language Services of Reading, PA . It’s simple format is perfect for me!  Too much info just makes my brain turn to mush.  Which is why as often as possible I avoid shopping at ginormous stores.  But this…this amazing chart…is just super!  LOVE it! In case you’re curious…Trevy is solidly in the 2 to 3 years bracket (he’ll be 5 in April!) .  And maybe…just maybe…beginning to emerge into the 3 to 4 years box.  Depending on the day.  …danielle

Trevy’s wishing you a go-go power ranger weekend!

Sundays are the best

I’m not 100% But… I’m kinda… sorta… pretty sure…   that Sundays are the best!   Because we get to spend time with our favorite friends at Special Olympics.      …danielle

if he could tell you…

I found that little nugget on Pinterest and thought I should totally make a Tee outta it.  How many times have I witnessed him seizure-y…but being asked to complete a task?  Too many.  And it’s exactly what Trevy would say if he could tell you he was having a seizure.     Gimme a sec here…       Actually, now that I think about it - he does say it .  You just have to be fluent in Trevy.     He tells you with his eyes.  There is no missing the confused expression on his face.     He tells you with his verbal responses.  They are slurred and difficult to produce.     He tells you with his mouth.  Which is tight and crooked.  Often locked in a weird (bordering on creepy) grin.      He tells you with his lips.  Which are smacking together like he’s tasting something.  And maybe he is.  Maybe seizures have a flavor. ...

boardmaker feelings book

If you’re not already addicted to Pinterest (like yours truly is) then you totally need to check it out. There are just SO many great and adorable to look at ideas out there!      And sometimes, you’ll even strike gold.  Meaning…someone else not only shares a great idea, but does the work for you too!     If you have a child with special needs you’ll probably recognize these…         Yep.  It’s Boardmaker.      One of my fave Pinterest finds of the week is Chapel Hill Snippets’ printable (and free!) boardmaker book for Valentines Day!     …danielle

seven snippets

One   There are weekly nut shell link ups all over the homeschooling world.  I join in when I can.  I’m SO happy to find one for my special needs side of life!  If you’re a special needs mommy with a blog…I hope you join the Seven Snippets Fridays hosted by Bringing the Sunshine .   And a special thanks to my sweet friend, Heather , for sharing her seven snippets.  Which inspired my sharing.      Two   Trevy had his annual eye exam yesterday.  I *heart* Dr. Waldorf .  He has such a peaceful presence and is SO great with Trevy.  Trev was a pro at the exam this time around.  He has right sided Homonymous Hemianopsia .  Which is just a fancy way of saying, he’s missing the right field of vision in both eyes.  This is a direct result of his hemispherectomy.  It’s so wild to see him swat at an itty bitty piece of lint falling in front of his face.  But not see a flower toy come...

start with the alphabet

One of the simplest alphabet-y things to do (mommy hint: other than filling a sensory bin with letters!) is creating your own alphabet book!  You can buy one of course.  But making it together will be fun!  And most special little kiddos learn best by doing !                  But wait…I’ve got a let-you-off-the-hook secret!   It doesn’t have to be fancy!    If you’re a crafty girl, this super cute felt book might be just the ticket for you.  And if you wanted to make a second one for me…I would totally accept.      I, however, am really not all that crafty.    So I used construction paper.  Cut to fit a plastic page protector.  The perfectionist in me had to cut off the white strip on the side of the page protector.  I then hole punched.  Used the little ring-y thingies I have around.  But you could staple y...
