dream night 2010

I'm not gonna lie.

In between all the therapies, toxin pushing, seizures, surgeries, doctors appointments, special ed advocating, doctor discussions, meltdowns, tears, fears, sleepless nights, fuzzy futures...

in between all that...

you will find a Special Needs perk hidden here n' there.

Dream Night at Zoo is one of those perks!

Our local Children's Hospital sponsors a special night every June...

for families dealing with chronic medical conditions...

to come and enjoy all the zoo has to offer. Beside other families living in the trenches too.

There are fun little exploration centers set up everywhere...

like this clay-mation station which sensory Trevy wasn't too thrilled about...

But his artsy sister was!

Toby actually stayed behind this year. Instead, attending a very (if you're a 9 year old boy) important Little League game. It was a big deal. See, I'm fairly uptight about supporting each other. But he came to me very maturely and explained his reasons - like what if he's supposed to hit in the winning run but he's at the zoo instead? I was really proud of the way he handled the situation. And compromised, letting him go to the game if he promised to spend extra 1:1 time with Trevy to make up for missing Dream Night.

While his team was busy winning...

Trevy and Bristel were busy adding their hand prints to a special exhibit...

that will grace the halls of Hasbro Children's Hospital.

I couldn't get Trevy to unclench his fist!

Until it was time to splash in the wash off water bucket anyway!

We had a really nice time...

Dream Night is definitely on our fave things to do list!

We're already looking forward to making next year's Dreamy memories!

It must be so hard to balance the needs & desires of your "non medical" kiddos against Trevy's needs. I'm glad it worked out for you this time :)

This is a Bibi question. Did Bristel lose a tooth already? One picture looks like she did. She is growing up too fast!! Love and hugs all around, Bibi

Special Needs or not...mommyhood is the business. Trying to balance everything. And Shepherd little hearts. It's tough stuff! I'm hoping that lots of love covers a multitude of mistakes! :)

Bibi...she lost two teeth with the fall last year. AND two teeth naturally this year! She's getting SO big!

This was a dreamy post! Two princesses at the top. Two Princes following! He had his hands open on the glass. I like how he does not have the binky in his mouth!

a different kind of muscle — guardianship process

To all the parents who have walked through the guardianship process — my heart is with you. Our paperwork is prepped and ready to submit this week. He turns 18 on April 3rd. I've been thinking about this for a year now, but only just mustered the energy to move forward — the loom of his birthday my propellant. Overwhelm has paralyzing effect. I'm struggling to recall the last time I didn't feel overwhelmed. It struck me how all these years of walking through disability beside Trevor should have made me stronger and yet... I suppose it's a different kind of muscle being developed.

No, I don’t know him personally

I’ve had several emails today asking if I know Mike W. of Marissa’s Bunny personally.    Trevy’s blog was linked on her site.  Although it’s not now.     I’ve posted here and there at his request.  Because…well…we’re a community.  Us IS families.  And Marissa is wicked cute.  Her daddy has a way with words.  Also who wouldn’t want the world to know about an iPad give-away?    But aside from that…I know about as much as you do.    We’ve never met in person.    Our only communication has been cyber.    I’m a ginormous sap and as such would love to believe that all is right.  That the sweet, beautiful families who were promised iPads will be getting them tonight.  Tomorrow at the latest.  That no one has been lied to.  That the personal thank you for your generosity email I sent him on behalf of other IS families I’ve grown to love and was thrilled to learn w...

the great answer hunt in the land of Infantile Spasms

If I've said it once... I've thought it a million times more. How it's like the more I research...and discover...about IS. The more blurry everything becomes. For every answer found. A dozen questions are unearthed. Remember our whole ARX saga ? Yeah...that threw me for a loop. So much so...that I never went on to post the end of the story. Thus far... See...the unbelievable in the world of genes happened. Because this is IS-ville after all. After Dr. Genes sampled Trevy's ARX gene on a whim...a whim which revealed an unkown (meaning the first time this specific change was found) mild mutation...she proceeded to send Toby's blood off to mad scientist central. With assurances that this was totally unnecessary . She was convinced that Trevor's ARX mutation was the underlying cause of his Infantile Spasms. And that Typical Toby...would prove to be just that. Typical...at least in all areas mutate-able. And yet...Toby's ARX blood sample revealed THE SAME MIL...
