how it's Supposed to be

Three Thanksgivings ago we were admitted into our local Children's Hospital.  Trevy would be spending his very first Turkey Day inpatient.  So little.  Too little.  Our beautiful baby.  We were still reeling from the diagnosis.  Unpacking our luggage.  Because as Life would unfold...we wouldn't be catching that plane back to Tanzania in two weeks after all.  We were emotionally exhausted on all sides.  One being from battling our insurance company (I must always inject: AIG) for a week - we had finally won the $125,000 battle.  Preparations were made for Trevor to start his first course of Acthar (or ACTH) the day after.  It's a bitter sweet memory.  Bitter...because would to God we had stayed ignorant of this thing called Infantile Spasms.  Sweet because Bibi and Babu had canceled their own return to Africa flight.  And were instead surrounding us with love and support.  Along with Grams & PopPop and a whol...

parent-teacher conferences

Toby's was a cinch.  Although truth be told...his dad was a bit flirty with the teacher!  The teacher being me , of course.  So I didn't really mind the flirty.    ::smile::  Tobes is getting As, Bs and a C in Penmanship.  Because his mommy is a meanie!  No "but I'm a lefty" excuses for sloppy handwriting in this house!  ********** Since two outta three of his siblings are our holiday guests...we have in-home babysitters!  And I chose to take advantage of it!  Which is how I convinced Jonathan to attend Bristel's with me. Bristel is a successful student.  She tested far above average in her reading readiness skills.  Which surprised and delighted me.  See, I've been completely convinced I failed her last year.  Because...you know...much of my last year was consumed with all things seizures & brain surgery. I had very little energy left to invest in preparing her for K.  Her math and writing s...

because I'm nosey

I randomly check out the various ways people find their way to Trevy's little slice of cyberspace...  infantile spasms video  cutest puppies in the world  new pet scan PICU baby mommy blog postictal vomiting  nurse kim and toys  and my very very personal had me in hysterics favorite  mothers who lie to doctors to get their kids on medicine!

ahhhhhh

I love my son.  Truly.  Honestly.   I love him when he smiles.  The crooked parts are the cutest.  I love him when he slaps me. I love him when he calls my name.  A million times over.  For the very same thing.  And should I start to get annoyed I remind myself to remember the time when he couldn't.  And my love swells even deeper.    I love him when he bites.   Though I'd prefer not to be the target. I love him when I plop his cheeky butt in Time Out.   I love him when he eats.  Especially crunchy food.  He scrunches up his face in the most adorably crooked way.  And crunch...crunch...crunches.  I love him when he's driving me bonkers.  I love him when his eyes sparkle. Mischievously mostly.  Sweetly sometimes.  I love him when I'm exhausted.  And it's all his fault.   I love him when he discovers something new.  Like how to del...

mononucleosis is a jerk

Seriously.  Seriously .  I have never seen Trevy that sick other than that time he was having radical brain surgery . Poor baby!  But before you start feeling too badly for him...he's bouncing right back.  Sure, he's sitting with his iPad for a few minutes longer than normal.  And yes, he's been getting most of his sustenance from chocolate milk.    But seriously.  Seriously .  He's already trying to bite me again!  I'd say that's a close to miraculous recovery!   ::wink::

when 2 days feels like 200

2 days feel like 200 when one of your children has acute Mono (yes...that's the final answer!) which practically swells their little throat closed sending you to the closest Children's Hospital. Hospital stays suck.   And I guess I've gotten a reputation for being a beggar to go homer .  Cause when Dr. Pedi From the Same Practice made rounds yesterday she emphasized not being in a hurry to send us home.  The funny part is...I wasn't complaining. Monday was just way too scary.  Surreal scary.  The ambulance.  His O2 levels dropping.  Being whisked to critical care at the ER.  Hearing beeping and paging on the speakers and knowing it was for my son.  His fever so high if he were more than non-verbal-ish he'd have been saying crazy delirious things we could have giggled about later.  When he was well again.   Which wasn't Monday OR Tuesday.  In fact, by the end of Tuesday I was in the beginning stages of a full fl...

Sweet irony

How is it possible that I notice the minutest of seizures... And yet miss when he's blue around the lips and nail beds? That is irony. It is also ironic that Trevy's first ride in rescue would have nothing at all to do with seizures! He spiked a fever on Saturday. By Sunday he was so outta sorts that I begged his pedi to please just see him. He kindly did. And diagnosed him with swollen tonsils (not strep though...the rapid test was negative) and a double ear infection. If he didn't get better in a couple days I should call again. But over night things just continued to worsen. Poor baby! I had NO idea just how bad things were progressing. Which explains why I left Trevy with Grams...so I could attend his IEP meeting. My mommy-dar prompted me to call Dr. Pedi's office during the car ride to the school. But I swear...even as I told the nurse that "I've never seen my son this sick before and he had half his brain removed!" I still didn...

warmth

To love... and be loved... is to feel the sun from both sides. -Barbara Johnson

speaking of Jaws...

Quite possibly the funniest YouTube video evah! Because everything is funnier with an English accent! And to answer your question... Yes, Trevy found this one too!  YouTube remains Trevy's fave iPad haunt.  And yes, it's quite possible this video may have inspired recent vampire antics at our place.
